Summer 2024: Canada to Ohio

Our middle of nowhere Ohio camping spot for the night. We woke up in Canada and drove way too many miles thru Michigan to get to this random KOA.

Let’s backtrack to how we got there. (Not gonna lie tho, it was a pretty boring drive and this blog is pretty much all about our vegetarian travel food.)

Friday was obviously a super long drive day. We started with the muffins we bought at Tim Horton’s for breakfast along with the kpods of Tim Horton’s coffee from the grocery store.

After breakfast, I blended our pre-made frozen smoothie packs while DJ got the camper ready to roll. Having the pre-made packs makes blending our smoothies in the morning super quick and we only use 1 blender cup in the process. Once blended, we store our smoothies in our IronFlasks in the truck until we are ready to drink them later.

We got on the road quite early, by about 8:15 am, I think(?). Then we crossed the bridge back to the US.

The US boarder was less busy than Canada’s was when we crossed over. We got thru after answering several of the same type of questions as before.

Having prepared as much as possible for the super long drive day, here are all of Amelia’s meds for the rest of the day. Her 11 am and 7 pm meds. She gets meds at 3 am too. (Yes, I wake up everyday to give those).

Here was our prepped lunch that I made in the truck. We had peanut butter banana roll-ups. So, in the gallon ziplock bag I had 3 bananas, a package of tortillas, squeezie peanut butter, a plastic knife, and a paper towel.

Time to assemble!

Time to eat. We had our peanut butter banana roll-ups with our smoothies (and some snacks). Perfect long drive-day food.

Having my smoothie! You can see Amelia’s gtube feed syringes prepped and hanging out in the cup holder. I space out one of those 60 mL syringes every 5-10 minutes to kind-of mimic the rate in which a gtube pump would put formula into her stomach.

Puppy snuggles! He likes to sneak up between the headrest and the door from the back seat to hang out. Messi spends most of his time on Jackson’s lap or in his small travel kennel on the floor between the kids’ feet.

Oops! Never fun to see half the contents of your fridge on the floor when you come in. This happens when the door is too heavy (typically happens a when we have a small carton of milk in it). It has more force/momentum then to swing open when it’s heavier.

Dinner was at an Ohio Turnpike Travel Plaza rest stop. I made DJ and myself veggie wraps with hummus, salad mix, shredded carrots, cherry tomatoes, avocado, bell peppers, onion, and Trader Joe’s “Everything but the Bagel” seasoning. Super yummy and full of veggie goodness! Jackson had a Nutella sandwich.

We arrived at our campsite just before 8 pm after being in transit for almost 12 full hours. Obviously driving a truck pulling a camper is slower going than a car, but we did miles on Friday!

After we were parked, we did showers, prepped a bit for Saturday’s drive back to Virginia, and went to bed!
