Camper modifications: queen bed lift and front stabilizer jacks

Last night, DJ installed the struts for the queen bed to lift. I had bought the struts for our original camper and we never got around to installing them.

With us removing the dinette and loosing the storage under it, we needed to utilize the space under the queen bed for inside storage. The back section of the bed storage is normally only accessible thru the outside storage door.

This process involved unscrewing and rotating the particle board 180° to swap where the hinge is. Then DJ added the struts. This will make it super easy to grab stuff like clothes, shoes, and whatnot.

This morning, DJ drilled in and attached the front scissor stabilizer jacks. We were using little removable pyramid stabilizer jacks before for the front of the camper. Again, these scissor jacks were purchase a few years ago and were never installed. DJ was a little more hesitant on doing some of the bigger mods before. Clearly not now tho!

The set I purchased came with 4 of the heavy duty stabilizer scissors jacks. I’m pretty sure DJ will be replacing the ones currently on the back of the camper tomorrow afternoon. He is on quite a roll these last few days!

For comparison, the new scissor jacks are on the red “Legos” the less heavy duty jacks are on the back and the yellow “legos.” Our old camper only had jacks on the back also. They weren’t the scissors style, just a single arm that came down. So, these are a big improvement.

The other benefit of getting rid of the pyramid style removable stabilizers is that we don’t have to store them while in transit. These obviously are attached permanently and won’t cut into our limited storage.

I should note, a lot of these projects are only projects for us because our camper is a entry level and a cheap camper. Fancier and more expensive rigs come equipped with nice scissor jacks, bed lifts, etc…

We decided to not upgrade our camper at this time because of DJ’s work schedule now and the fact we live in a state that gets snow during the winter. Therefore, our camping season is shorter and date options are more limited. We plan to keep this 17B for at least 2-4 years and assess as our kids get bigger and what schedules and other factors look like in the future for us.

Hopefully I’ll be getting some more stuff done tomorrow for the camper. Between a very spicy Amelia today (it’s like she knew today was her first day is summer), and just normal home upkeep… I didn’t do much for the camper prep except order a couple things and wash some more of our kitchen supplies.

More updates tomorrow!
