Day 3: Tucson – Las Cruces, NM

Insert foot in mouth… wasn’t I just commenting that I was happy we were only passing through the snow on day 1 of this adventure? Seriously. I think I jinxed us!

The wind was definitely rocking our tiny camper last night and we were content to snuggle up with the fireplace on. We discovered the snow when the wind started pelting it on the side of the camper. (We had our reflectix on our windows to help insulate and couldn’t see out).

Because we weren’t prepared for snow and freezing temperatures, we did the only things we really could do… disconnected the water and turned up the fireplace. We had a couple water bottles in the truck and they didn’t have any signs of ice forming in them this morning. Note to self, it is still winter in the US… the sunny and 70° San Diego norm almost year-round definitely messes with us and our mental recognition of the seasons.

DJ is currently off buying some anti-freeze to add to the black and grey tanks as we are dipping down below freezing tonight, it’s expected to be 26°.

Yep, we brought the kayaks to the desert to have them covered in snow. None of that makes sense.

And for reference, my hand was next to the top of the table. We got over 2 inches (?) last night… craziness.

Gorgeous, but this shouldn’t be a thing. Right? Like snow in the desert just blows my mind a bit… again, I do realize it is winter time.

When we left our campsite, we had about 1/4 mile on a dirt road. The roads out here are wavy to help with the rain. DJ called the dirt road “pudding” as it was soft and mushy. We decided it was a good thing we left when we did before more of the snow melted as we assumed the road only got worse and filled with more puddles.

We crossed into New Mexico after a lunch stop at a gas station in the middle of nowhere. We love having the camper with on road-trips. I had some granola, Jackson had a tuna sandwich, DJ had a smoothie blended with the Jackery power bank and some random other stuff, and Amelia got a gtube feed.

I haven’t taken any photos outside since we arrived at the pecan farm HipCamp camping spot we are staying at the next two nights. It’s definitely not as pretty as our site in Tucson and we are off season for the pecans, bummer.

As mentioned yesterday, the wind has been pretty gnarly and cold. We don’t mind cozy camper time though. Tonight we all showered in the camper after leftover curry for dinner. It was the first time we used our shower in the camper since moving in 5 days ago. We used the campground showers at the Navy campground on Coronado and hobo-ed the rest. Gotta love some no-rinse shower wipes, no-rinse shampoo, wet wipes, face wipes, and dry shampoo. We didn’t want to fill our grey tank with shower water when we didn’t have a spot to dump it in Tucson.

Tonight we are snuggling up and catching up on some of our favorite shows/YouTubers… TBD

Tomorrow we are driving just over an hour, without the camper, to White Sands National Park and plan to do some sledding down the sand dunes while there. Our next campground will be a KOA in Carlsbad, NM to hopefully do some laundry before continuing on with our travels.

… until tomorrow’s adventures!

  1. Awesome pics… Snow on a cactus seems very unanticipated but stranger things have happened 😁 Jackson with shorts on in the freezing snow definitely exhibits his Cali lifestyle 😳 Definitely a road trip for many memories and an exciting experience 😉 Hey Amelia 👋🏾 Happy camping & Safe travels 😊
